Seven Sins Against T-SQL Performance – Grant Fritchey on Simple Talk

UPDATE: this was drafted long ago, but couldn’t really got to post it till now. You might find this post a bit old, BUT it’s quite relevant even now and extremely informative post.

I came across this gem of an article which lists out 7 things that affect T-SQL performance.

I do not want to take anything out from that article and post it here, as you would realize by reading the original post, you would learn some very important concepts.

Read it here: The Seven Sins Against T-SQL Performance.

Developing Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Applications – Book By Leslie Vail

DMDGBA

UPDATE: Author of this book, Leslie Vail, has got a post on her blog (Dynamics Confessor Blogspot). Link now added here to her own post: Published at last! Developing Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Applications.

I had the privilege to be a part of the technical reviewing of this amazingly informative book: Developing Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Applications.

This book is penned by one of the most experienced GP personality and multiple times MVP, Leslie Vail. Packt Publishing has published this book.

I strongly recommend this book to all GP developers/consultants who would like to know how to develop anything with regards to Dynamics GP; be it a new feature addition, a feature modification or just a cosmetic enhancement.

Thanks Leslie Vail for this wonderfully written book with every single important concept being covered.

Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 RTM

My comeback post MUST have to be this.

Microsoft announced the general public availability of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 RTM on 19th December 2012. This has been the biggest release yet, with more than 140 new features. ONE single feature that stands out of all is GP Web Client.

Below are the posts covering this release:

David Musgrave: Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Released to Manufacturing, Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 now available for download.

Mariano Gomez: Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Released to Manufactuting (RTM)

Mark Polino: Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 is now available!

Second link against David’s name would lead you to links to Dynamics GP 2013 RTM downloads (both from PartnerSource and CustomerSource).

I have started preparing to take my company on to the new version. Excited to say the least. Will share each and every interesting & critical upgrade information as and when I progress.

Back to Active Blogging

I had been almost nonexistent from Dynamics GP community for the past 5 months. For various reasons; some were compelling, but some were quite silly. I was off late busy with two things; my daughter’s schooling and my only passion (other than Dynamics GP) that is photography.

Down the lane, I just realized that I had been missing so many amazing things that were happening on Dynamics GP community. This lagness had taken me to oblivion.

My passion towards Dynamics GP had never died down. I am now back to active blogging and will be continuing with my knowledge sharing. I won’t let down my blog readers at any point of time and would continue to be a source of GP information, as much as I can.

Important announcement for GP’s Extender Module – Victoria Yudin

Thanks a bunch to Victoria for her critical post regarding Microsoft discontinuing direct sales of Extender (Standard) module.

Read her post from here, Big announcement for Microsoft Dynamics GP’s Extender module, as I do not wish to brief the contents further.

I was kind of shocked/surprised when I read it. Not long ago, Microsoft did the same thing to two other modules; Audit Trails and Electronic Signatures. But as Jen Kuntz from Kuntz Consulting put it, Extender has a wider and a successful reach than the other two. This module is quite brilliant for 100% codeless customization option for all customers.

Got to wait and see how this would go with customers.

SSRS – Repeat Header Rows On Each Page – Not Working

I was facing a weird issue on SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) wherein each page of my report was setup to show Header Row, but was actually not.

I had an SSRS table (Tablix) which was setup to repeat header rows on each page of my SSRS report. This option must be setup as shown below:

Despite setting up as shown above, it was not repeating the header row on all pages, except the first one.

Upon digging more on this, I got to visit a blog named Business Intelligence Chronicles by Christo Olivier. The post which saved (taught) me on how to overcome this issue is: Header Row Does Not Repeat On Subsequent Pages.

It’s very informative and crystal clear in terms of how it explained the steps to follow.

GP2013 – Feature of the Day – Inventory Reason Codes

The first feature published on this series is the Inventory Transaction Reason Codes. You have a nicely made small PPT presentation attached which explains this new feature.

My Opinion:

It’s certainly a welcome feature after all, though it’s not a game changer altogether.

I used to instruct my clients to enter a note on every IV adjustment passed, be it a positive adjustment or a negative one. And most of them (99% to be precise) have not followed it. They simply do not want to reason those adjustments, however genuine it might be. Later when auditing happens, they would run around to figure out why exactly they posted those entries.

With this, at least, we have an option to classify each adjustment meaningfully and take a stock of such entries. Auditors would also be happy to know about it.

Question(s)Is this Reason Code a MANDATORY for each adjustment? If not, then the purpose is lost.

Let’s wait and see.

Enjoy reading the series (and be educated on upcoming version & it’s new features).

With the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 SP3, MSFT GP development team has fixed one of the nagging bugs which got introduced in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 R2.
