GP2016 Upgrade – Modified Dictionary Upgrade & Upgrade Troubleshooting

Over at Dynamics GP Support & Services blog, couple of posts discussing about following are available:

Both posts discuss in detail about how to upgrade modified dictionary and how to troubleshoot upgrade issues. In particular, the upgrade troubleshooting post is crucial for obvious reasons.

Just about 10 days to get my hands on Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016. It’s gonna be fun.

GP2016 – Feature of the Day – Smartlist from Favourites & Word Templates on Batch Approval

Next couple of features posted on Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog have excited me for obvious reasons.

  • Smartlist from Favourites: Users can now create a Smartlist from a favourite, retaining the search conditions and columns list. Great time saver.
  • Word Templates for Batch Approval Workflow: How about the ability to view the entire batch content before approving? That’s exactly what this feature is about. Excellent feature. This would further eliminate GP application dependency for trivial tasks.

GP2016 – Feature of the Day -Export/Import in SLD, AA Access & More

I was busy with various activities that I missed some interesting/exciting FsOTD on Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog.

I am particularly excited about the last two in the above list; AA Access and Smartlist Designer Export/Import.

The gap between Smartlist Designer and Smartlist Builder is slowly (yet steadily) getting filled. While Smartlist Builder is one of its kind, Smartlist Designer now gives customers a lean version of Smartlist Builder that would satisfy most of the requirements. I am happy as a consultant that I now have an improved Smartlist Designer to talk about with customers/prospects.

Analytical Accounting User Access Settings – Steve Endow perfectly expressed his (and mine as well) thoughts on this tweet. Can’t agree more.

GP2016 – Version Checks & Upgrades

Informative post up on Dynamics GP Support & Services blog about Version Checks & Upgrades. It discusses about various version check issues while upgrading GP.

I have had an interesting experience with one upgrade recently. While upgrading this customer’s GP to GP2015 R2, version check failed for one particular product. After going through the tables and SET file, I learned that the product in question was not part of DYNAMICS.SET and was not physically present in GP application folder. However, the SQL objects were very much present and DU tables had records for this product with quite an old version.

Customer informed that the previous implementer had installed this product, however in due course they realised that it was not required at all. Product was removed from the application environment, so there won’t be any necessary interference, however SQL objects and records remained.

It was a pain to clean up the records and continue with the upgrade process.

Beware of all possible scenarios and plan the upgrades well.

GP2016 – Known Upgrade Issues

Latest post from Dynamics GP Support & Services Blog has listed down all known GP2016 upgrade issues.

Some interesting ones, in my opinion, are:

  1. Account Framework Table Conversion – Tables getting converted are listed. This one’s crucial.
  2. Database Compatibility – Make sure to change the compatibility level of all DBs (system & company DBs) to the version of upgraded SQL Server (SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014). To my surprise, they have not mentioned about SQL Server 2016 yet. I know, SQL Server 2016 has not been released yet, however, I would have expected some kind of note somewhere that says GP2016 would support SQL Server 2016 once it is released.
  3. Workflow Documents Must Be Final Approved – Please make sure that all workflow documents are final approved before running the upgrade. Would fail otherwise.
  4. Overlapping Fiscal Periods – Make sure that you don’t have any overlapping fiscal periods by any chance.

One thing that I noticed (and got happy about) is that there’s no known issue mentioned about GP Web Client. I don’t know if we would have a separate post discussing the known issues. So far, I haven’t seen one, so I am happy that things would go well with HTML5 web client.

Let’s plan the upgrades well, people.

GP2016 – Feature of the Day – Export as Numbers to Excel

This one won’t seem a big deal, however those who use Smartlist and Excel day-in day-out would agree with me that it’s a pain to see numbers getting exported as string from Smartlist to the Excel.

We had to then format the column as either number/currency and then continue with our analysis.

With this FOTD, we are gonna save time. No frustrations either. With GP2016, we can export amounts from Smartlist as numbers to Excel.

In my opinion, this is not a new feature. This should be categorised as an improvement. I am glad that all these small nitty-gritty details are coming through well with each release.

GP2016 – Feature of the Day – PA Document Attach & Payables Credit Cards

Next set of “feature of the day” posts give us a glimpse on:

Interesting thing about PA document attach feature is that the attachments on Project Time Expense (PTE) would flow to Project Accounting and to Payables.

GP2016 System Requirements

I did not notice this being published and just got to know. Thought I would share that immediately.

GP 2016 system requirements data sheet is available.

While most of them are quite expected, one important point caught my attention.

Under “Additional Requirements”, it’s mentioned that Dynamics GP 2016 will NOT support Office 2010 32-Bit/64-Bit applications. However, we will have to wait for the final system requirements data sheet once GP2016 is officially released.

It’s still worth noting, as GP boasts off tight integration with MS Office.

GP2016 – Feature of the Day – Inventory AIO Viewer & Project on Purchase Requisition

Excited to see the “All-In-One Viewer” being extended for all modules. After sales, inventory has got its own AIO viewer.

Perhaps the most important feature that I am excited about, in addition to HTML5 Web Client, is the ability to add a Project to Purchase Requisition Entry. This was sorely missed by many of the customers. I am glad this feature made it to GP2016.
